Absa Premiership match report Bidvest Wits v Highlands Park 26 October 2018

Posted: 26 October 2018 Time: 18:38

Bidvest Wits saw off Highlands Park with a 1-0 triumph in the Absa Premiership to stretch their lead at the top of the standings.

It was built as a big six-pointer with neither of the two sides starting promisingly, but the clash did open up as the half progressed.

After a few half chances particularly from Wits, Mxolisi Machupu launched the first effort on target when he hit the post after a layoff from Simon Murray.

The Scotsman was then at the end of a half opportunity when he turned inside the box to get a shot away but a quick block from Kapini kept him away from scoring before halftime.

The deadlock broken exactly seven minutes to the break through Thulani Hlatshwayo nodding home Keegan Ritchie’s free-kick.

The Lions of the North looked for an immediate response when Mothobi Mvala found space to get a scrap shot away but Darren Keet saved for a corner instead.

The second half started in the way anticipated. The first chance came after 48 minutes but Lindokuhle Mbatha’s half-hearted attempt deflected off a defender into touch.

The promoted side didn’t stop pushing and opened up their hosts with resounding ease from time to time.

In the 59th minute, Edwin Gyimah was the first substitution of the evening, replacing an out-of-sorts Machupu.

The visitors responded with their first change as well. Namibian Denzil Haoseb took the spot of the ineffective Peter Shalulile within seconds.

In the closing exchanges, chances were reduced to a premium with neither side pushing to get more on the score board.

The victory in the end has now seen the Students stretch their lead at the top of the standings to four points over second place Orlando Pirates.
