Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United played out a goalless draw in the Absa Premiership on Saturday evening.
The opening start was lively from Bucs as Justin Shonga connected with a long ball but sharp alertness from Richard Ofori who rushed off his line thwarted him on 11 minutes.
Maritzburg showed some promising moves and Fortune Makaringe’s run through the middle drew a save from Siyabonga Mpontshane.
Pirates still showed their dominance when Vincent Pule found space on the wing before managing to cut inside to draw but the end result flew across the face of goal.
A free-kick out wide found Thembinkosi Lorch who managed to get inside the box to force a finger-tip from Ofori.
Pirates looked ominous whenever in possession of the ball and a cross from Pule found the head of Innocent Maela who failed to find the target.
A well-worked throw-in created a good opening for Maritzburg nine minutes to halftime, but Andrea Fileccia was unable to steer home from five metres away.
It was end to end stuff closer to the break as Maela’s into the box ended up rattling the post with a cross-cum shot.
In the second half, Pirates struggle to break down the Maritzburg continued who kept plugging away.
However, a rare moment of brilliance set Shonga free but was unable to make the most of a bubbling shot in front of him.
Maritzburg introduced Keletso Makgalwa at the midway stage for Ivorian Yannick Zakri to liven up their slow attack.
A good ball on the shoulder of the defence picked out Augustine Mulenga who dummied his marker before shooting into the side-netting.
Bucs responded with their first change under 20 minutes to go as Thabiso Kutumela entered for Shonga.
A dangerously looking free-kick from the edge of the box by Pule forced Ofori to get his full armour on it to punch it away for a corner.
The Team of Choice rattled the upright through a shot from outside the box by Deolin Mekoa with 15 minutes remaining.
With three minutes remaining, Pirates were given a let off as Rushine De Reuck failed to find the back of the net from close metres as the gamed ended goalless.
