Goals from Anthony Laffor and Lebohang Maboe handed Mamelodi Sundowns a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership on Saturday afternoon.
Chiefs came without influential captain Itumeleng Khune, but there were absentees on the other side of the coin too.
Sibusiso Vilakazi, Denis Onyango, Themba Zwane as well as Andile Jali and Wayne Arendse were all missing for the Brazilians.
That didn’t stop the visitors from making a bright start when Anthony Laffor cut inside the box after combining with Gaston Sirino to punch in the opener on three minutes.
The Amakhosi responded when Willard Katsande reacted sharply to head home a free-kick from an unmarked position on 14 minutes.
A quick breakaway directed by Lebohang Maboe saw the ball end up with Laffor, whose shot from close range was cleared off the goal-line later on.
In the second half, Ernst Middendorp threw on the first change off the bench in veteran striker Bernard Parker who replaced Hendrick Ekstein at the resumption.
The Amakhosi missed a golden chance to go in front for the first time in the game when Parker sent a low header wide of target four minutes from the break.
Following yet another inviting opportunity, Billiat produced a rush of blood to the head to blast over a simple tap-in from inside the box.
The Brazilians were under pressure yet again and aided by a stroke of fortunate, Parker sent a close-range header off a free-kick wide of goal.
The Glamour Boys were forced to make a save after Katsande was unable to continue playing through a niggling injury, with Kabelo Mahlasela called in his place.
With Downs growing stronger as the half neared its completion, the home side silently strutted their stuff in an attempt to get back in front.
A howler from Virgil Vries, who misjudged a long ball from Lyle Lakay was easily thumped into the net by Maboe to put Downs back in control in the last 10 minutes.
It was proving to be a chasing game for the Soweto giants who failed to get any sort of attacking fortitude to cause an upset on the visitors with time running out.
In added time, the Tshwane giants were content to just retrieve possession to see out the encounter and maintain their unbeaten run with a victory.
