Justin Shonga's first-half strike was enough to hand Orlando Pirates a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in the Absa Premiership on Saturday evening.
Pirates made only change from their 4-1 thrashing of AmaZulu as captain Happy Jele returned to the line-up while Arrows introduced Nduduzo Sibiya for Lerato Lamola.
After keeping Abafana Bes’thende on the back foot in the early stages, Justin Shonga finally broke the deadlock for Pirates in the 21st minute with a curling left-footed strike from just inside the box to the far corner.
Steve Komphela’s charges should have equalised in the 31st minute after the visitors goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands spilled a long range strike from Seth Parusnath into the path of the on-rushing Knox Mutizwa, who was unable to convert from close range.
Arrows grew in the game in the last quarter of an hour of the first stanza, but they were often let down by their crossing as the Buccaneers defence stood firm.
The game was open in the early exchanges of the first stanza and Shonga nearly doubled the lead two minutes before the hour after going clear on the left side of the box but his strike was saved by Arrows goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede.
With Arrows pushing for an equaliser, Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic needed fresh legs in the 62nd minute as he brought on Xolani Mlambo for Luvuyo Memela.
Pirates sat deeper as the half went on, but they were dangerous on counter-attacks as Thembinkosi Lorch broke free nine minutes before time although he was unable to find a way past Gumede.
The visitors defended in numbers in the closing stages as Arrows pushed for an equaliser, but they were able to see out the latter stages of the half to claim three points.
