SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs failed to close in on the pace-setters in the Absa Premiership following a 1-1 draw at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday evening.
Chiefs gave a debut to Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and re-called Willard Katsande to the line-up while United brought in Siyabonga Nhlapo and Phumlani Ntshangase.
SuperSport were off to a blistering start, as Mxolisi Machupu headed in a rebound off Bruce Bvuma after just two minutes.
Momentum swung either end, but Chiefs seized advantage and grabbed the equaliser in the 14th minute after Khama Billiat’s shot from outside sailed into the top corner.
SuperSport pushed forward again, but Bvuma reacted to steer Aubrey Modiba’s shot away with Machupu fluffing the rebound, before Williams made another point-blank save off Katsande’s toe-poke following a free-kick on the half-hour mark.
With no changes at the break, the tempo from the first half dropped early on, as Clayton Daniels’s header flashed wide off a free-kick in the first 15 minutes.
United looked to get back in front on 63 minutes, but Bvuma saved Machupu’s close-range poke following a long ball.
Late on, Modiba received a presentable chance to put United back in front but Bvuma made a routine save as the points were shared.
As a result, both sides see their title hopes dented, although SuperSport could have moved up to third spot if they had secured three points.
