AmaZulu secured passage into the Telkom Knockout quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Cape Town City on Tuesday evening.
The game started cagey in the opening exchanges, as both the sides failed to grab any rhythm from the get-go.
The very first strike came from City through a snap shot off the boot of Siphelele Mthembu from the edge of the box but it flew well off target after 10 minutes.
Usuthu’s first chance happened soon thereafter with a dangerously taken free-kick by Marc Van Heerden.
There was then a big chance for them when Ovidy Karuru saw his effort cleared off the line on 23 minutes after linking up with Emiliano Tade.
After a slow tempo, the next opportunity happened four minutes to halftime when Nhlanhla Vilakazi hit a volley from outside the box but it flew over the top.
Early in the second half, good play Usuthu opened the way for Van Heerden to have a shot on goal but Sage Stephens made an easy save.
The deadlock was broken just after the half and hour mark with Tade finishing off a nice move from 12-yards out.
In quick succession, Usuthu made it two after Bonginkosi Ntuli sliced home from inside the box.
The Citizens had it all to do, but the tails were up on the side of the KZN side outfit who were hell-bent on giving nothing away.
With the lead in hand, Usuthu saw it fit to introduce their first change too with Siyathemba Sithebe replacing Karuru after 72 minutes.
In the final sectors, City kept throwing men forward to get on the score-board but Usuthu’s strong defence kept them out to guide themselves in the last eight.
