Nedbank Cup Last 32 report: Cape Umoya advance after beating TUT

Posted: 25 January 2019 Time: 17:21

Cape Umoya United sent Tshwane University of Technology packing to advance to the next round of the Nedbank Cup.

Umoya have joined Bidvest Wits and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC in the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after beating TUT 2-1 at Athlone Stadium on Friday.

The First Division outfit were made to sweat by their SAB League opponents, who managed to fight their way back after going a goal down in as early as the fifth minute.

Brandon Theron opened the scoring for the hosts, after some sloppy defensive work from a corner saw the ball fall kindly for the defender to slot home.

The Cape side were then reduced to 10 men as former Ajax Cape Town defender Shane Saralina was shown a straight red for an apparent professional foul just outside his own area.

However, the students were unable to capitalise on the free-kick opportunity as Dominic Isaacs reshuffled his pack to compensate for the shortfall.

The two sides had a right go at one another but neither were able to make the most of their chances, as they went into the break with the scoreline unchanged.

TUT's fighting spirit eventually paid dividends when they picked up a poor pass at the back before Lebogang Radebe slotted home the equaliser around the hour mark.

Spurred on by their first goal against second-tier opposition, the Tshwane outfit kept their emotions intact as they defended neatly to thwart the likes of veteran striker Nathan Paulse, Manti Mekoa and Brandon Theron.

However, the quality and experience of Paulse eventually proved decisive as he kept his cool to ram home the winner in the penultimate minute of regulation time.
