George Maluleka's Kaizer Chiefs captaincy explained

Posted: 10 January 2019 Time: 07:57

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has explained his selection of George Maluleka as captain against Bidvest Wits on Wednesday evening.

Maluleka skippered Amakhosi for a second time this season as they went on to beat the Absa Premiership log leaders 2-0 at the Bidvest Stadium, cutting their lead at the top to just two points over rivals Orlando Pirates.

The 30-year-old also led the team to a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United in December, again in the absence of regular skipper Itumeleng Khune and deputy Willard Katsande.

After struggling for a regular spot in the line-up under Giovanni Solinas earlier this season, the former junior international looks to have found favour under Middendorp, who has since revealed what it is that he sees in Maluleka.

“George is one of our very, very important players. All players are equal, but some key players are more equal, and George is definitely somebody who is more equal,” explained Middendorp.

The former SuperSport United attacker, however, was replaced by Lorenzo Gordinho with 15 minutes left to play, and the German tactician has since explained the reason for this.

“His Achilles was burning a little bit, but I think it’s just to manage it over the next three or four days, and he will be okay,” he added.
