Mamelodi Sundowns in a good position to defend their title after rivals drop points

Mamelodi Sundowns were not involved in the past weekend’s Absa Premiership action, but they would no doubt have been the happiest with how things turned out.
Four of the clubs in the top five dropped points over the weekend, giving Sundowns – who have games in hand – an advantage in the title race.
Leaders Bidvest Wits were beaten 2-1 at Highlands Park, third-placed Orlando Pirates had to come from a goal down to secure a point in a 1-1 draw with fifth-placed Kaizer Chiefs, while fourth-placed Cape Town City were defeated 1-0 by AmaZulu in KZN.
Sundowns would no doubt have been keeping up with the scores from Abidjan, where they’ll be playing Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas in a CAF Champions League Group A match on Tuesday.
The Brazilians are in second place on the standings, three points behind the Clever Boys, with three games in hand. Sundowns have never defended the league title under coach Pitso Mosimane and this is their best chance to do that.
“They are in a good position to defend the title,” former Sundowns midfielder Roger Feutmba says.
“Even before the season started, they were already in a good position to defend the title because of the quality of the team and the players they have.
“They are facing a lot of challenges, with the Champions League and all that, but they can still win their games and be on top of the log,” the Downs legend adds.
