Diego Maradona on Lionel Messi national pride and 'sorcerer' Cristiano Ronaldo after UCL hat-trick

Posted: 13 March 2019 Time: 18:00

Argentina legend Diego Maradona says the country is proud of Lionel Messi but made an interesting statement about Cristiano Ronaldo after his record-breaking exploits with Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.

Ronaldo netted a sublime hat-trick to dump Atletico Madrid out the Champions League as Juve overturned a two-goal deficit in the knock-out stage for the first time in the club's illustrious history.

The 34-year-old took his overall tally in the competition to 124 goal – the most of any player, with Messi in second with 106.

With The Old Lady now moving into the quarter-final stage and viewed as favourites, Ronaldo is now on course for a fourth consecutive title but it was his words in the pre-match build-up that left even Maradona shocked.

"There are players who are touched by the magic wand," Maradona said, as per Marca.

"The truth is that us Argentines are proud that Messi is Argentinian and did not go with the Spanish.

"The other is an animal. Ronaldo is pure power and is now also a sorcerer: he said that he'd score three goals and he scored three goals."
