Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says Thembinkosi Lorch’s Absa Player of the Month award was long overdue, and hopes the player will play a key role for Bafana Bafana going forward.
Lorch, who won the award for February, has arguably been Pirates’ best player this season, getting into double figures in terms of goals in all competitions.
The former Cape Town All Stars winger has been included in Stuart Baxter’s Bafana squad to face Libya in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier next weekend. On current form, the 25-year-old could find himself in the starting line-up for the senior national team, in a game they cannot afford to lose.
Lorch’s game has improved immensely over the last year or so, showing a lot more composure in the final third of the pitch, be it when he is creating opportunities or putting the ball in the back of the net.
Mosimane likes the fact that Lorch is a winger who contributes with goals.
“I want to congratulate Lorch first for the award, it’s long overdue. I mean he is scoring goals and he is really contributing to Pirates’ success from last year. What’s encouraging for him is that he is starting to score goals. As I always say I don’t like wingers who just cross the ball, wingers must score,” Mosimane said after Lorch was announced as the Player of the Month.
“So he is just showing maturity and he is getting there. His contribution is big. He is a hard runner, he is always there and he is always fighting for the team. He deserves it. The future is bright. I’m just crossing fingers that very soon he will be helping us with national colours.”
