Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has bemoans failure to collect important points

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has bemoaned his side’s failure to collect important points during the season and pardoned their less-than-attractive style of play.

With the season reaching its climax, teams across the league are beginning to scramble for points as they compete in different parts of the Absa Premiership table – some for the title; some to survive relegation; some for a top-eight spot and others for CAF inter-club positions.

Chiefs are currently caught somewhere between the latter three, although they do still have a mathematical chance of also challenging for the championship.

However, Middendorp is well aware of the main responsibility at this stage of the campaign, which is to pick up as many points as possible, and has not shied away from admitting they have already dropped more than they could afford to in recent matches.

“Against SuperSport, we want the result – that’s what counts now. We have thrown away too many points – six or seven – through errors and not taking our chances when we could have been in a leading position,” said Middendorp.

“Just to make it very clear, that’s not something I’m just saying, it’s reality. We can sit down and [scrutinise] with In-Stat or whatever [statistics] system you want, and we will all be of the same opinion.

“So, at the moment, sorry for not having a certain run of performances where we can say, ‘Wow, that was tempo; that was speed; that was excellent’ or whatever.

“At the moment it is about results. I said it after the game [against Highlands Park], forget about this part [of playing attractive football]. It’s now about fighting and about three points, and that’s what we’re focused on and nothing else.”
